An Act to make certain provisions relating to the erection of a joint Memorial to Their Late Majesties King George V and King George VI; to validate certain matters; and for purposes connected therewith.
Preamble
WHEREAS at a public meeting convened by the Lord Mayor of Sydney and held at Sydney on the sixth day of May one thousand nine hundred and thirty-six it was resolved to create a Fund for the purpose of erecting a memorial to perpetuate the memory of His Late Majesty King George V; And whereas it was resolved at that meeting to appoint an Executive Committee to be known as the King George V Memorial Fund Committee; And whereas an appeal was made by such Committee for public subscriptions to the King George V Memorial Fund for the purpose of erecting a memorial in the form of a statue of His Late Majesty King George V; And whereas at a public meeting convened by the Lord Mayor of Sydney and held at Sydney on the tenth day of August one thousand nine hundred and fifty-three it was resolved to inaugurate an appeal to be known as the King George VI Memorial Fund for the purpose of establishing a memorial to perpetuate the memory of His Late Majesty King George VI in conjunction with the memorial to His Late Majesty King George V; And whereas the memorial to His Late Majesty King George V has not been erected; And whereas it is now expedient to make provision for the erection of a joint memorial to Their Late Majesties King George V and King George VI and to utilise for such purpose the King George V Memorial Fund and the King George VI Memorial Fund; And whereas it is desirable to validate the payment of certain prize moneys and commission from the King George V Memorial Fund:
BE it therefore enacted by the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly of New South Wales in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
1 Name of Act
This Act may be cited as the King George V and King George VI Memorial Act 1953.
2 Purpose for which Funds may be used
The King George V Memorial Fund and the King George VI Memorial Fund may, notwithstanding any trusts affecting the same, be utilised or applied for the purpose of erecting a joint memorial to Their Late Majesties King George V and King George VI. Such memorial shall be:(a) in the form of a stone wall and memorial gates and ancillary works associated therewith according to designs approved by the Premier and the Council of the City of Sydney, and(b) located in the Sandringham Memorial Gardens situated in Hyde Park in the City of Sydney.
3 Validation of prize payments
The application from the King George V Memorial Fund of the amount of three hundred and seventy-five pounds for the payment of prize money to the winners of the first, second and third awards in the competition for the design of a memorial conducted by the King George V Memorial Fund Committee and of the amount of one hundred and eighty pounds for the payment of commission to the winners of the first award in such competition is hereby validated.
